Zeca Ligiéro/NEPAA

Zeca Ligiéro is a writer, visual artist and director. He holds a Ph.D. at NYU and a post doctorate in Art History at Yale University. He coordinates Núcleo de Estudos das Performances Afro-Ameríndias (NEPAA), the Study Group of the Afro-Amerindian Performance, at UNIRIO, and was the curator of the Augusto Boal Collection from 2009 to 2011. As theater director, he adapted and directed The Third Bank of the River, based on the work of Guimarães Rosa, and Elegba Crossings, a Journey in the United States; He has directed Noticias de las cosas pasadas, based on the work of Augusto Boal, in Colombia, and with Barbara Santos, directed the the production Mama Africa for the Third Festival of Black Art in Senegal. He has published books in Portuguese, English and Spanish, including Divine Inspiration from Benin to Bahia (USA), Iniciación al Candomblé (Colombia), and Iniciação ao Candomblé e Malandro Divino, a vida e a lenda de Zé Pelintra, personagem mítico da Lapa carioca (Brazil). He has directed several documentaries, including Samba no Pé and Zé Pelintra’s interactive altar.

NEPAA is dedicated to promoting research, dissemination, and exchange with various cultures of African, Indigenous, and other non-hegemonic origin, and to studying their inter-relations within Brazil.  NEPAA works with both the performing and the ritual arts, seeking to stimulate constant exchanges between the academic community, the art world, political activism and the religious world of the cultures with which it works. NEPAA’s researches belong to a wide range and diversity of subjects, objects and fields of interest, related to the theory and practice of staged performance, cultural performances, such as rituals and celebrations, and artistic performances in their various forms. The work tools used by NEPAA have been field research, digital documentation, and literature review.
