Join HNYPN Artist in Residence Paloma McGregor for story circles about Dancing While Black with leading Diasporan scholars, writers and artists. Dancing While Black is McGregor's artist-driven effort to support and illuminate the diverse work and experiences of black dance artists through production, process, dialogue and documentation.

Participants include: Brenda Dixon-Gottschild, Eva Yaa Assantewa, John Perpener, Ebony Golden, Adia Whitaker, Gabri Christa, Nia Love, Marya Wethers, James Frazier, Onye Ozuzu, Shalonda Ingram and Antonio Brown, with additional contributions by Jawole Zollar, Kyle Abraham, Raja Kelly, and Camille Brown.

Paloma McGregor is a Harlem-based artist and community builder. She has created performance work for theaters, outdoor stages, abandoned buildings, parks and a river. She co-founded Angela’s Pulse with her sister, director Patricia McGregor, to create collaborative performance work that illuminates undertold stories, brings diverse communities together and animates progress. Paloma is currently developing Building a Better Fishtrap, an iterative performance project that explores water, memory and home, and is inspired by the fishing stories of her 88-year-old father. Paloma is also continuing Dancing While Black, an initiative created in 2012 to support diverse voices of black dance artists through process, production and dialogue.

Led by the Hemispheric Institute and supported by the Rockefeller Foundation’s NYC Cultural Innovation Fund, the Hemispheric New York Performance Network (HNYPN) seeks to create innovative, long-term institutional partnerships with key NYC arts spaces to provide creative  support and training for politically engaged local performance-based artists. Core partner institutions are Dixon Place, HERE, Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance (BAAD!), La MaMa, and Brooklyn Arts Exchange (BAX).
