Somewhere within the city, a fire will be kept mid-afternoon. An offering of tea and bannock will be made to passersby. Here, a notice will be posted stating that the fire itself and the sound of our voices will be streamed live via video-camera and projected onto a large wall at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. A fire with people gathered around it for warmth becomes a poetic projection, a measure of the conceptual distance between the disparate realities that exist within our cities. The simultaneous positioning of myself as community member and as artist, questions the impact and role of the creative gesture. A giveaway will take place at both sites.

WAG and the University of Winnipeg Institute for Women's & Gender Studies have commissioned acclaimed artist Rebecca Belmore to create Here, a new performance work in connection with the exhibition Off the Beaten Path: Women, Art and Violence. A live stream from the performance site to the WAG will run from 2-4pm. Presented in partnership also with MAWA and Ka Ni Kanichihk. Supported by the Manitoba Arts Council. Support has also been provided by the Canadian Consortium on Performance and Politics in the Americas.

Born in Upsala, Ontario, Rebecca Belmore is an artist currently living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She attended the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto and is internationally recognized for her performance and installation art. Since 1987, her multi-disciplinary work has addressed history, place and identity through the media of sculpture, installation, video and performance. Belmore was Canada's official representative at the 2005 Venice Biennale. Her work has appeared in numerous exhibitions both nationally and internationally including two solo touring exhibitions, The Named and the Unnamed, Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, Vancouver (2002); and 33 Pieces, Blackwood Gallery, University of Toronto at Mississauga (2001). Her group exhibitions include Houseguests, Art Gallery of Ontario (2001); Longing and Belonging: From the Faraway Nearby, SITE Santa Fe, Santa Fe, New Mexico (1995); Land, Spirit, Power, National Gallery of Canada (1992); and Creation or Death: We Will Win, at the Havana Biennial, Havana Cuba (1991).
