Gifts of the Spirit: Automatic Writing
I devised a automatic writing machine, a complicated system that required 16 writers, six manual typists, two runners, two cut-up editors, two to six vocalists, a hypnotist, a pianist. After ironing out the complications of creating and reading back a collectively authored text, I had to reckon with what it meant to use my memoir, “Gifts of the Spirit,” as the source text for the writing, which was spread out and edited back together under the fun. Total performance time was 60 minutes. The topics were based the the stories “Written in the Ectoplasm,” “The Catholic Envy of Vena Mae,” “Sister Linda’s Miraculous Gift of Stigmata,” and “Ecstatic Tears.”
